What Is 0DTE? How Zero Day Options Move NQ

By Ken Baggett · Updated August 18, 2026

0DTE means zero days to expiration: options that expire today. Since daily expirations launched on the index products, 0DTE contracts have grown into a huge share of all S&P and Nasdaq options volume on many sessions, and they are a big part of why modern NQ moves the way it does: sudden accelerations, hard stalls at specific strikes, and afternoons that pin to a price like it is magnetized.

Why same-day options move the market

An option expiring today has almost no time value, so its gamma is enormous: its delta swings violently as price approaches the strike. The dealers on the other side of all that volume have to hedge those swinging deltas in the futures market, in size, all day. When billions of dollars of same-day gamma is concentrated at a handful of strikes, dealer hedging flow becomes a real force in the order book. That force is what the GEX levels measure: 0DTE is the fuel, and the levels are the map of where it burns.

The two behaviors 0DTE creates

What changes during the day

0DTE positioning is not static: it is built, rolled, and closed intraday. A wall that mattered at 10am can dissolve by 1pm because the contracts behind it were closed, and a fresh strike can light up after a big directional push. This is exactly why static premarket levels age badly on heavy 0DTE days, and why we re-pull the profile three times per session instead of once. The walls you trade against should be as current as the positioning that creates them.

What this means for a futures trader

You never have to touch an option to be affected by all of this: if you trade NQ intraday, you are swimming in 0DTE hedging flow every session. The practical takeaways are simple. Know where the big strikes sit before the open. Respect that moves can accelerate past reason when the regime is negative. Expect gravity around the pin strike late day, and do not fight it with breakout trades at 3:30. And treat expiration Fridays with extra respect: the largest gamma concentrations produce the strongest versions of both behaviors.
