VWAP Bounce Strategy for NQ: Exact Entry, Stop Loss, and Take Profit

By Ken Baggett · Updated August 18, 2026

The VWAP bounce is the workhorse continuation strategy on NQ: join an established trend at the price where the average participant is positioned, instead of chasing extension. Complete rules below: entry, stop, targets, and the standing-down condition that keeps you out of chop.

The setup

This strategy only exists on a trend day. Price must be clearly on one side of VWAP, with VWAP itself sloping in the trade direction. If you are not sure what VWAP is or why institutions benchmark against it, read that first: the whole edge comes from who defends this line. Confirm the trend with internals: on a long setup you want cumulative TICK leaning positive and ADD holding its morning direction. Then wait for the pullback. No entries while price is extended away from VWAP.

Entry

Price pulls back and touches VWAP. Do not buy the touch. The trigger is a rejection: a 1-minute or 2-minute candle that trades at or slightly through VWAP and closes back on the trend side. Enter on the close of that candle or on a stop order 1 point beyond its high (for longs). The first and second touches of the day are the tradeable ones. By the fourth touch the line is failing, not holding.

Stop loss

Below the low of the rejection candle, plus 2 points of buffer for the spread of noise NQ produces around a magnet price. If that low is more than about 20 points away on the 1-minute, the pullback is too violent for this setup: skip it. Size off the actual stop distance with the sizing formula so a normal loss stays a normal loss.

The stand-down rule

Count VWAP crosses. If price has closed across VWAP three or more times in the last hour, it is a rotation day and this strategy is switched off until tomorrow. Trading VWAP bounces inside VWAP chop is how a clean 2R strategy becomes a slow bleed. One more filter: gamma regime. Positive gamma days produce cleaner, mean-reverting pullbacks that respect the line. Deep negative gamma days produce the violent pullbacks that blow through it, so demand the rejection close and take the smaller size.
