Twice a month or so, the calendar puts a bomb in the middle of the session: CPI at 8:30 AM ET, FOMC at 2:00 PM. These days blow up more accounts than crashes do, mostly because traders bring a normal-day playbook to an abnormal-day market. Here is what actually happens and the playbook that survives it.
In the seconds around the number, liquidity evaporates. Resting orders pull, spreads widen from a tick to sometimes ten or more, and price can travel 50 to 100 NQ points through what looks like empty air. Your stop does not fill where you placed it: it fills where liquidity reappears. This is not a broker conspiracy, it is the mechanical result of everyone stepping back at the same moment. A stop sitting in the market through a release is not risk management, it is a market order with a delay.
The initial spike is algorithms reacting to the headline number in microseconds. The real market digests the details slower: revisions, core versus headline, the dot plot, the press conference tone. That is why the classic release pattern exists: violent spike one way, full reversal, then the real move. Trading the first spike means trading against everyone who read past the headline. Sometimes it works. Statistically, you are the liquidity.
Big releases often land in negative gamma conditions, where dealer hedging amplifies every move: that is part of why release-day trends extend so far. And after FOMC passes, implied volatility gets crushed, which frequently flips the market back toward positive gamma pinning behavior into the close. Same afternoon, two regimes. If that sentence made sense, you are ahead of most of the market. If not, start with the two playbooks.
Check the calendar every single morning: it takes thirty seconds and it is the cheapest insurance in trading. The daily levels tell you where. The calendar tells you when to not care where. Both are part of how we run the morning inside Pro.
Reading about levels is one thing. Watching them trade in real time is another. STS4x members get the full daily key levels for NQ, ES, and GC, plus live trading sessions every weekday at 9:30 AM ET where the systems run out loud.
