“Only take 3-to-1 trades” is the most repeated and most misunderstood advice in trading. Risk/reward is real and it matters, but the way it is usually taught produces fantasy targets and mangled stops. Here is the honest version, with the math that actually governs your P&L.
Expectancy = (win rate x average win) – (loss rate x average loss). That is your entire business in one line. Risk/reward is half of it: win rate is the other half, and they trade off against each other constantly. A 3R target is not better than a 1.5R target: it is a different business model with a lower win rate. Neither is virtuous. Only the combination pays or does not.
Suddenly “only take 3-to-1 trades” reads differently: it is a commitment to being wrong three times out of four and staying emotionally functional through it. Most traders cannot psychologically survive 25% win rates: the losing streaks are brutal (nine straight losses is routine at that rate) and streaks are what trigger every failure in the psychology guide. A realistic 1.5R at 50 to 55% wins is a calmer, more survivable business than a theoretical 3R at 30%.
Two manufacturing defects produce most “great R:R” trades:
Before entry, three questions: where is the structural stop (level-based), where is the structural target (next real level), and does that honest ratio clear roughly 1.5R? If yes, size it with the formula and take it. If no, skip: the market posts new odds every hour. And track your ACTUAL average win versus average loss monthly: not the planned ratios, the realized ones. Most traders discover their real R:R is far below their intended one, because they cut winners early and let losers breathe: which is a psychology finding wearing math clothing.
The ratios come alive when you see them at real levels on a real chart: today’s structure is on the free daily map, and watching honest R:R decisions made live with money on is the daily curriculum inside Pro.
Reading about levels is one thing. Watching them trade in real time is another. STS4x members get the full daily key levels for NQ, ES, and GC, plus live trading sessions every weekday at 9:30 AM ET where the systems run out loud.
