How to Paper Trade So It Actually Transfers to Real Money

By Ken Baggett · Updated August 5, 2026

Paper trading has a terrible reputation among traders who did it wrong and a quiet fan club among traders who did it right. The difference is not the simulator. It is what you practice in it. Here is how to sim so the skills actually transfer to real money, and the honest list of what never will.

Why most sim work transfers nothing

The standard approach: open a sim, trade huge size with no rules, get lucky, conclude you are ready, blow a real account. That sim taught exactly one thing: how to click. Skills transfer when the practice matches the performance conditions: real position sizes, real rules, real session windows, real consequences tracked. A sim run at 10x your real size with resets whenever it gets ugly is rehearsal for a play you will never perform.

The transfer rules

What the sim can never teach (plan for it)

Fills are friendlier in sim: real markets slip you at the worst moments, so expect your real numbers to run a little worse than sim numbers. And the big one: sim losses do not hurt. The threat response that produces revenge trading only fires with real money, which means your first weeks live are a second education no simulator can give. Bridge it deliberately: go live at the SMALLEST possible size (one micro), keep everything else identical, and treat those weeks as paid tuition in emotional regulation, not as the profit phase.

The sequence that works

Sim until the process is boring, go live tiny until the feelings are boring, then scale on the account’s evidence. It is slower than the internet promises and faster than blowing three accounts. Watching disciplined execution live every morning while you sim is the accelerant: you absorb the pace and the patience before your money is ever on the line. That seat is what Pro is.
