NQ trades 23 hours a day, but it does not trade the same way for 23 hours. The session you choose decides the volatility you get, the fills you get, and the kind of trader you have to be. Here is how the overnight (Globex) session and regular trading hours (RTH) actually differ, and when NQ really moves.
Regular trading hours run 9:30am to 4:00pm ET, when the cash Nasdaq market is open alongside the futures. The overnight session is everything else: the evening reopen at 6:00pm ET, the Asian hours, the European morning. The futures price is live all night, but the character changes completely, because the participants change. RTH is where the institutional flow, the options hedging, and the vast majority of volume live. Overnight is thinner, slower, and driven by headlines and foreign markets.
Overnight NQ can look calm for hours and then travel 40 points on a single headline, because there is less resting size to absorb any order. Thin books mean wider effective spreads, more slippage on stops, and moves that run further than the news deserved. It also means the overnight high and low become important RTH levels: they mark the boundaries of a low-volume auction, and the day session loves to test them, sweep them, and reject them, as covered in liquidity sweeps.
For most traders the honest answer is no, at least not as the main session. The spreads are wider, the moves are headline-driven, and the options positioning that gives RTH its structure barely applies at 2am: the walls and flip level are hedged against the day session’s flow. Overnight is genuinely useful in two other ways: as context (where price traveled overnight, and whether it held the prior day’s range, frames the open) and as levels (overnight high and low belong on every RTH chart). If you do trade it, size down for the slippage and treat every position like the overnight margin and headline risk it carries.
