This is a complete ruleset, not a concept. Entry, stop, targets, and the filter that decides whether you take the trade at all. The opening range breakout is one of the oldest day trading strategies in futures for a reason: the first 15 minutes of the session concentrate the overnight decisions of everyone who was waiting for the open, and the break of that range is often the day’s first real commitment.
Mark the high and the low of the first 15 minutes of the regular session, 9:30 to 9:45 ET. That box is the opening range. Do nothing while it forms. Two levels come out of it: range high and range low. Skip the setup entirely on FOMC days and CPI mornings, where the event calendar owns the tape and the opening range means nothing.
Before taking any break, check the gamma regime. In negative gamma, breakouts have fuel: dealer hedging chases price, and range breaks tend to travel. In positive gamma, hedging leans against moves and breakouts die at the nearest wall, so either skip the breakout or cut the target expectation in half. This one filter removes most of the classic ORB failure days.
Two acceptable triggers, pick one and stay consistent. Aggressive: buy the stop-run through the range high (or sell through the low) with a stop order 2 points beyond the level. Conservative: wait for a 1-minute close beyond the range, then enter on the retest of the broken level. The retest entry fills less often but eliminates the worst fake-outs.
The stop goes at the midpoint of the opening range. Not the opposite side: on NQ a full-range stop is usually too much risk for the reward available. If the break was real, price should not come back through the middle of the box. Size the position off that stop distance using the position sizing formula, and read stop placement for why the midpoint beats a fixed tick count here.
Run it on sim for two weeks before risking a dollar, and log every trade so you know what the ruleset does in your hands, not in theory. The gamma regime and the wall locations that set your targets are published free three times a day on the NQ levels page, with the full profile in Pro.
Reading about levels is one thing. Watching them trade in real time is another. STS4x members get the full daily key levels for NQ, ES, and GC, plus live trading sessions every weekday at 9:30 AM ET where the systems run out loud.
