Price tells you what the index is doing. Internals tell you what the whole market underneath it is doing, and the disagreements between the two are some of the most reliable information a day trader can get. Here are the two internals worth watching, how to read them, and how they combine with levels.
TICK counts, at every moment, how many NYSE stocks last traded on an uptick minus how many on a downtick. It updates constantly and reads like a live vote:
Two honest uses. First, confirmation: NQ pushing higher while TICK holds strongly positive means the move has the market behind it. Second, exhaustion: extreme TICK prints into a key level often mark the crescendo of a move rather than the start of one: the last buyers buying, the last sellers selling.
ADD is advancing stocks minus declining stocks, cumulative for the session. Where TICK is the heartbeat, ADD is the scoreboard: it moves slowly and tells you the day’s true breadth. Deeply positive ADD (over +1500) with a rising slope is a broad up day: fading strength on those days is fighting the whole market. Flat or choppy ADD near zero means a rotational, two-sided session even if the index prints a trend: index moves without breadth behind them are often being carried by a handful of mega caps, and those moves fail more.
Internals earn their place on the screen at the moments price and breadth disagree AT structure. NQ makes a new session low right at the put wall, but TICK refuses to print a new extreme and ADD has quietly stopped falling: the index is stretching while the market underneath already stopped selling. That divergence, at that location, is one of the highest-quality reversal contexts in day trading. The same signal in the middle of nowhere is trivia: internals do not replace the map, they interrogate it. Location first, internals second: the same principle as order flow.
Put TICK and ADD in a small pane under your NQ chart. Before acting at any key level, ask two questions: is TICK confirming or exhausting, and does ADD say broad day or rotational day? Those two answers, combined with the gamma regime, describe the day’s character better than any indicator package sold online. We run internals alongside the levels every single morning live: seeing the divergences called in real time at the walls is where this clicks, and that room is Pro.
Reading about levels is one thing. Watching them trade in real time is another. STS4x members get the full daily key levels for NQ, ES, and GC, plus live trading sessions every weekday at 9:30 AM ET where the systems run out loud.
