Some afternoons the Nasdaq stops acting like a market and starts acting like it has an appointment. Price drifts to one strike, sits on it for two hours, and closes there almost to the point. That is not coincidence. That is the daily pin, and the mechanics behind it also produce one of the most tradeable moves of the day: the forced close.
The pin is the strike with the heaviest options exposure expiring today. As expiration approaches, dealer hedging around that strike gets more aggressive: gamma is highest right at the money, right before expiry. Price above the pin invites selling pressure back toward it, price below invites buying back up to it. The strike becomes a magnet, and the pull strengthens through the afternoon, especially after 1 PM ET.
In the morning, today’s expiry is one voice in a crowd: plenty of time value left, plenty of other flows. By early afternoon, the expiring options dominate dealer hedging math, and the pin’s gravity takes over. This is why chasing breakouts at 2 PM on a heavy pin day feels like running in sand: every push away from the strike creates hedging flow that drags price back.
Here is the part most traders never learn. All that hedging dealers built up during the day has to come off at the close, because the options it was hedging expire. The direction of that unwind is knowable in advance:
It is not a guarantee, it is a bias with conditions. The signal is strongest when gamma is heavy, price has been sitting near the pin for hours, and the pin is close. A light-gamma Tuesday with price 80 points from the strike is noise. A monthly expiry with price glued to a massive pin since 1 PM is a setup.
Know the pin before the open, watch whether price accepts the magnet after 1 PM, and if the close approaches with price still attached, know which side the unwind favors. It pairs naturally with the regime: pins behave best in positive gamma, where dealer flow already favors mean reversion.
