Daily Loss Limits: How to Set One Correctly and Actually Stop When It Hits

By Ken Baggett · Updated August 5, 2026

Everyone has heard “use a daily loss limit.” Almost nobody sets it correctly, and a wrongly set limit is worse than none: too loose and it does not protect you, too tight and it clips normal variance and breeds frustration trades. Here is how to size the limit properly and, harder, how to actually stop when it hits.

What the limit is actually for

A daily loss limit is not a prediction that your edge stopped working. It is a circuit breaker for YOU: the recognition that after enough losses in one session, the person trading is no longer the person who planned. Decision quality degrades measurably as losses stack: that is not a character flaw, it is the threat response doing its job at the wrong time (the mechanics are in the psychology guide). The limit exists to take the keys before the degraded version of you drives.

Sizing the limit: work backward from survival

Three numbers, in order:

Notice what this does on evals: firms impose their own daily loss limits, but a trader whose personal limit sits well inside the firm’s never meets the firm’s. The firm rule becomes irrelevant, which is exactly the goal.

Why traders blow through their own limit

The limit fails at the exact moment it triggers, because hitting it delivers the strongest tilt of the day: “I just need one trade to get back to even.” Getting back to even is the most expensive goal in trading: it has no edge requirement, no setup requirement, and unlimited appetite. The fix is never willpower at the moment of contact. It is making the stop mechanical: platform-level loss limits where available, closing the platform entirely, a scheduled commitment right after the session so leaving the desk has somewhere to go. Decide the exit ritual on a calm day. Execute it on autopilot on the bad one.

The reframe that makes stopping easy

A limit day is not a failed day. It is the system working: you pre-purchased insurance and today it paid out. The traders who last decades are not the ones who never hit their limit: they are the ones who hit it, stopped, and showed up neutral tomorrow. Tomorrow’s session with a clear head and the fresh daily map is worth infinitely more than today’s revenge. We practice this exact discipline out loud, live, every weekday inside Pro: including the days it costs us.

Learn it live, every weekday.
