Futures trade nearly 23 hours a day, which beginners hear as “opportunity all day.” Experienced traders hear it differently: 23 hours in which you can donate money, surrounding about two hours where the real business happens. When you trade matters as much as what you trade. Here is the NQ session map.
The market opens Sunday at 6 PM ET and runs overnight every weekday. Overnight NQ is thin: less volume, wider effective spreads, and moves that look dramatic but happen on low participation. Levels still matter, but follow-through is unreliable and one headline can gap through your stop. Unless you have a specific overnight edge, this session is for sleeping.
The cash open brings the volume, the institutions, and the real auction. The first two hours produce the majority of the day’s tradeable range and the cleanest reactions at key levels. It is also when the day’s character reveals itself: whether the gamma regime is producing a range day or a trend day usually becomes clear in the first hour. This window is why our live sessions run at 9:30 sharp every weekday: it is when the map gets tested. The one caution: the first five minutes are pure noise. Let the open breathe before you touch anything.
Volume drains, ranges compress, and setups that would work at 10 AM die quietly at noon. More accounts are ground down in lunch chop than in any crash: traders take morning-quality signals in midday conditions and pay full price. Flat is a position. Eat lunch.
Afternoon trading has its own physics. Options expiring that day start dominating dealer hedging, and price often gravitates toward the day’s heavy strike: the daily pin. The last hour adds the forced close: dealers unwinding hedges into 4 PM with a bias you can know in advance. The afternoon rewards a different playbook than the morning: less breakout, more magnet.
CPI at 8:30, FOMC at 2:00, and similar releases override everything above. Spreads widen, stops get vaporized, and the first move is routinely the wrong one. Know the calendar every morning: it takes thirty seconds and prevents the worst fills of your life.
If you can only trade one window, trade 9:30 to 11:30 ET with the day’s levels in front of you. The free NQ levels update at 9:15 AM, before the bell, precisely so the map exists when the real session starts. And if you want to see the window traded live every single weekday, that is what Pro is.
Reading about levels is one thing. Watching them trade in real time is another. STS4x members get the full daily key levels for NQ, ES, and GC, plus live trading sessions every weekday at 9:30 AM ET where the systems run out loud.
