The ADHD Trader’s Daily Routine: Prime Your Brain Before the Bell

By Ken Baggett · Updated August 25, 2026

If you have ADHD and trading feels like a daily fight with your own brain, this routine is what you have been missing.

Here is the whole article in one line: an ADHD brain that sits down to trade cold will chase dopamine in the market, so you feed it dopamine before the market opens, on purpose. Everything below is just the how. It takes about 90 minutes and none of it is complicated.

Why priming works

ADHD brains run lower on baseline dopamine. Unprimed, the brain arrives at the desk hungry, and a live chart is the most effective dopamine slot machine ever invented. Hungry brain plus slot machine equals impulse trades, covered in the strengths and weaknesses of trading with ADHD.

Primed, the brain arrives already satisfied: moved, lit, fed, and carrying a couple of completed wins. It can now wait for an actual setup, because it is not starving for stimulation. Traders call this discipline. It is mostly chemistry you set up in advance.

Timeline of the ADHD trader morning routine: movement, sunlight, two small wins, protein breakfast, pre-market review, then the trading session

The morning, step by step

1. Move your body first (before the phone)

Within a few minutes of waking, move: pushups, a walk, weights, jump rope, anything that raises your heart rate for 10 to 20 minutes. Exercise is the most reliable natural dopamine and norepinephrine boost available, the same chemicals ADHD medication targets. Checking your phone first hands your morning dopamine to an app instead.

2. Get sunlight in your eyes

Ten minutes outside, no sunglasses, ideally while you walk. Morning light anchors your body clock, sharpens alertness on schedule for the open, and improves tonight’s sleep, which is tomorrow’s focus. Free, boring, and absurdly effective.

3. Farm some dopamine: two small wins

Before the desk, complete two small, finishable tasks. Make the bed. Empty the dishwasher. Ten minutes of a chore you have been avoiding. Finishing releases dopamine, and finishing twice tells your nervous system that today is a day where you complete things. You are walking to the desk already winning, so the first trade does not have to prove anything.

4. Eat protein, skip the sugar

Protein first: eggs, meat, Greek yogurt, a shake. Protein provides tyrosine, the raw material your brain turns into dopamine. A sugary breakfast does the opposite: a spike at 8 AM and a crash right at 10 when you are mid-session. Caffeine is fine if it is fine for you, but put it after food, not instead of food.

5. Review before the bell, not during

Ten minutes: mark your levels, read the calendar, write down what would make you trade and what would keep you out. Deciding in advance moves the decision to your calm brain instead of your live-market brain. Then the session ritual: calm, prepared, not chasing yesterday. If the answer is no, the day is a no.

During the session: three rules

End the day like you mean it

Endings are an ADHD weak point, so make yours mechanical: log the last trade, grade the day, write one sentence about what you did well, close the platform. Then do something physical to mark the boundary, a walk, food, gym. No screens full of charts after the close. The review sentence is tomorrow’s head start, and the clean ending is what makes tomorrow’s routine repeatable.

⚡ The routine, enforced for you

The STS Trader Check-In runs this entire structure automatically. You clock in through your own morning ritual, every trade flows through your checklist, your trade count and loss limits are enforced by the system instead of by willpower, passing on a bad setup gets counted as a win, and clocking out files your report card. It was built for brains that need the structure outside their head, and it is included free.
